The church in the United States needs to do some serious “recalibrating” back to Jesus (or as Mike Frost and Alan Hirsch have said, we need to “ReJesus” ourselves and the church). Unfortunately when we recalibrate we usually don’t go back to Jesus, but instead we go back to our spiritual “heroes.” We too often are enamored by certain “heroes” and therefore recalibrate back to the likes of Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, the Puritans, one of the Reformers, etc.
But to truly “ReJesus” our lives we must be immersed in the incarnation, life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus found in the Gospels. What if we intentionally, and consistently immersed ourselves in the Gospels? What if we provoked one another to drink deeply from the Gospels daily? What if we then shared with one another how the ways of Jesus, found in the Gospels, was beginning to shape and form our hearts and minds in fresh ways?
That is where The Gospels Experiment comes in. The Gospels Experiment is a six-week immersion in the four Gospels of the New Testament. The next immersion will be from December 7th to January 18th. The goal each week will be to read, or listen, to all four Gospels, so by the end of the six weeks those who are participating will have read the Gospels at least six times. We will then have the opportunity to reflect with one another on The Gospels Experiment Facebook page. We will consider questions like:
How do we assess the continuity required between the life and example of Jesus and the subsequent religion called Christianity? In how many ways do we domesticate the radical revolutionary in order to sustain our religion and religiosity How can a rediscovery of Jesus renew our discipleship, the Christian community, and the ongoing mission of the church?
